NDT
[Non Destructive Testing - A process that involves the inspection, testing, or evaluation of materials, components and assemblies for materials' discontinuities, properties and machine problems without further impairing or destroying the parts service ability.]
Vessel Assessment Services provides the flag state, class society, and clients with reliable data to make decisions affecting classification and statutory surveys.
UTM's
Ultrasonic thickness measurements - The thickness measurement requirements for Annual and Intermediate Surveys are based on the conditions found at the time of survey, as well as conditions documented at the previous Special Periodical Survey. Thickness measurement requirements for Special Periodical Survey are based on age, size and type of vessel. The minimum thickness measurement requirements are contained in the applicable ABS Rules and Guides. For vessels subject to the ESP, thickness measurements for Special Periodical Survey are referenced in the required Survey Planning Document.
Angle Beam Inspection
Angle Beam is typically used to introduce a refracted shear wave into the test material. An angled sound path allows the sound beam to come in from the side, thereby improving detect ability of flaws in and around welded areas.
Magnetic Particle Testing
The Magnetic Particle inspection method consists of magnetizing the area to be tested and applying magnetic particles to the magnetized area. A leakage in the magnetic field caused by a discontinuity will attract the magnetic particles and give an indication which is characteristic of the type of discontinuity present.
Dye Penetrant Inspection
Dye penetrant inspection (DP), also called liquid penetrate inspection (LPI) or penetrant testing (PT), is a widely applied and low-cost inspection method used to check surface-breaking defects in all non-porous materials (metals, plastics, or ceramics). The penetrant may be applied to all non-ferrous materials and ferrous materials, although for ferrous components magnetic-particle inspection is often used instead for its subsurface detection capability. LPI is used to detect casting, forging and welding surface defects such as hairline cracks, surface porosity, leaks in new products, and fatigue cracks on in-service components.
VT
Visual Testing - A visual inspection is usually supplemented by NDT and thickness measurements when determining the vessels structural faults. Fractures, deformation, excessive pitting and coating failures can be reduced when problematic areas are noted and presented during any inspection process.
